🌉 What Is the Don Bridge?

The Don Bridge is the main bridge that crosses the River Don in Inverurie. It connects Inverurie with Port Elphinstone and has been an important crossing point for a very long time. People use the bridge every day to walk, cycle and travel across the river.

🏗️ A Bridge with a Long History

The first bridge at this spot was built in the late 1700s, so people no longer had to cross the river by boat or ford. The bridge you see today was built in the 1920s, replacing the older stone bridge. It was designed to be stronger and wide enough for modern traffic.

🪨 What Is the Bridge Made Of?

The current Don Bridge is made from reinforced concrete and has three large arches that span the river. The arches allow water to flow underneath, especially when the river is high. Strong piers and cutwaters help protect the bridge during floods.

🚶 Why Is the Bridge Important?

For hundreds of years, the Don Bridge has helped people move between communities. It made it easier to travel, trade and visit friends and family. Even today, it is a key route across the River Don and an important part of everyday life in Inverurie.

🌊 The Bridge and the River

The River Don can rise quickly after heavy rain. The bridge was built to sit high above the water so it can stay safe during floods. From the bridge, you can often see the river flowing below, along with birds, fish and river plants.

👀 Did You Know?

Before the Don Bridge was built, Inverurie was much smaller because it was hard to cross the river. The bridge helped the town grow by making travel easier for everyone.
